More about Island Krk
Discover the Island of Krk – The Golden Island of the Adriatic
Krk is a truly unique island — a place where history, culture, and natural beauty meet in perfect harmony. Often called “the continent island,” it offers a world of its own within the Adriatic.
With an area of almost 410 km², Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic Sea, surrounded by more than twenty smaller islets, reefs, and coves. It is also the most populated Croatian island, home to 68 villages and nearly 20,000 residents.
Located in the Kvarner Bay, close to the port city of Rijeka, Krk enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate — warm summers, mild winters, and over 2,500 hours of sunshine per year. This makes it a perfect destination in every season.
Unlike many Croatian islands, Krk is easy to reach. You can arrive by car via the Krk Bridge, by sea, or by plane — the Rijeka International Airport is located right on the island near Omišalj. Charter and panoramic flights also offer unforgettable views of the coast and the sea.
Nature lovers will find a paradise here. Krk’s lush forests, crystal-clear waters, and diverse wildlife invite you to explore and relax. The average summer temperature is 23°C, and the sea stays pleasantly warm from June to September.
Eco Island Krk
Krk proudly carries the title of Croatia’s first “Eco Island.” Since 2005, the island has pioneered sustainable waste management with a comprehensive ecological system covering all types of waste. More than 6,500 containers are placed across 1,400 locations, making Krk one of the cleanest and most environmentally responsible islands in the Adriatic.
Tip: While you’re here, take time to explore the many attractions Krk offers — from ancient towns and hidden beaches to scenic cycling and hiking trails that reveal the island’s authentic charm.
Hiking Trails
Hiking and Cycling on the Island of Krk
The island of Krk offers some of the best hiking trails in Croatia, combining mild Mediterranean climate, scenic landscapes, and over 300 kilometres of well-marked routes. Whether you love coastal walks, olive groves, forest paths, or ancient dry-stone walls — every step reveals another side of Krk’s natural beauty.
One of the most popular routes leads to Vela and Mala Luka, a paradise for explorers who enjoy panoramic views, local traditions, and peaceful encounters with nature. You might even spot island sheep grazing along the way.
Another favourite trail is the Veli Vrh – Obzova route. The climb is easy and rewarding — Veli Vrh (541 m) and Obzova (568 m) are the island’s highest peaks, offering breathtaking views across the Adriatic. On the way between them, you’ll pass Vela Lokva, a small pond divided by a dry-stone wall once shared by local shepherds.
Exploring Krk on foot is one of the best ways to truly connect with the island. Staying at Boutique Resort Osma, you’re perfectly positioned to discover these trails and enjoy unforgettable hiking days surrounded by pure island nature.
Cycling
Cycling Paradise on the Adriatic
Most walking trails on Krk are also ideal for cycling. With more than 300 km of marked cycling routes, Krk is one of the most bike-friendly islands in the Adriatic.
Cycling enthusiasts can explore the island freely or rent one of the electric bikes available in major towns — Baška, Krk, Malinska, Omišalj, Punat, Vrbnik, Stara Baška, and Klimno. You can pick up a bike in one location and return it in another. Charging stations are available across the island, including in the town of Krk itself.
The bike rental system operates 24/7 and is easily managed via the go2bike.hr app. It’s a simple, sustainable, and fun way to discover Krk’s beauty at your own pace.
So, lace up your boots or hop on a bike — and experience Krk’s wild side, where every trail leads to a new adventure.
Island Krk beaches
Beaches on the island of Krk are incredibly diverse — sometimes wild, sometimes urban, and often with unique health benefits.
Each beach tells its own story: rocky or pebble, sandy or muddy, hidden or lively. They are all different, attractive, inviting, and clean. Perfect for picnics, fishing, diving, boating, sunbathing, or family days by the sea.
Many beaches on Krk have been awarded the Blue Flag, a symbol of crystal-clear water and a safe, well-maintained environment.
The nearest beach to Boutique Resort Osma is Rajska Cesta (Paradise Road) — a scenic seaside path shaded by pine trees, leading all the way to the bay of Kijac near Njivice. Along the way, you’ll find beautiful coves and turquoise waters ideal for swimming, running, cycling, or relaxing walks in nature.
Vela Plaža (Baška)
Baška’s iconic main beach — one of Croatia’s most beautiful natural beaches. Stretching 1.8 km long, this Blue Flag beach boasts crystal-clear waters and occasional big waves loved by sailors and swimmers alike.
Soline – Healthy Mud Beach
Near Klimno, you’ll find something truly unique — a shallow bay where visitors cover themselves in healing black mud. This natural spa is famous for helping with joint pain and skin conditions. Even if you don’t need therapy, the experience itself is unforgettable.
Ježevac and Porporela Beaches
Located just a short walk from the old town of Krk, behind the red lighthouse. These small pebble beaches offer plenty of bars, restaurants, and recreational activities, making them a lively spot to relax near the city centre.
Explore the island’s coastline and discover your favourite beach — each one has its own charm waiting for you!
Some of the Most Beautiful Beaches on Krk
Oprna Beach
One of the island’s most famous — and most hidden — beaches. You can reach it by paddleboard or kayak, or hike down through a rocky landscape that feels like a scene from Winnetou. It lies between Punat and Stara Baška, offering breathtaking views and a sense of adventure.
Redagara Beach
A pet-friendly beach located east of Hotel Koralj. This peaceful cove has smooth pebbles and plenty of natural shade from fir trees — perfect for a quiet day by the sea with your dog.
Potovošće Beach
Just a 10-minute drive south from Vrbnik, Potovošće is a lovely pebble beach reached by a narrow road ending in a small parking area. The turquoise sea and peaceful atmosphere make it worth the short trip.
